Alison Church

Surrey Harmony
Alison Church - Unsung Champion 2020 - Sweet Adelines

Alison Church (Ali to her chorus friends) has been a member of Surrey Harmony for ten years. Her lovely voice is a key part of our tenor section and she has been leading our Membership Team for six years. She is the welcoming face of Surrey Harmony for our new members, welcoming them to their first rehearsals, providing them with music and details of the joining process, assigning buddies to help them through their first few months, answering any questions and keeping in touch at all times. Ali is always available to members, supporting people when they struggle to make it to rehearsal or to stay engaged with chorus. She also manages Surrey Harmony’s Diamond Club a very special group of women who have retired from the chorus but stay in touch with us through our social events and open evenings. On top of all this, Ali is also in charge of recording the key parts of our rehearsals and sending them round to members so we can hear how we sound and where we need to work harder!

Ali’s efforts for the chorus don’t stop there. She always steps up whenever volunteers are needed, whether that is for fundraising, helping to organise retreats and convention or problem solving. Just to add to her achievements, this year she organised a new septet of chorus members to compete in a local music competition, which they won! At the moment she is even sewing costumes for our next show – there is nothing Ali will not volunteer for.

Ali is unfailingly supportive and informative and does everything with a great smile and infectious laugh. Here are just a few words that the chorus members use to describe Ali: “helpful and supportive, reliable, efficient, good natured, enthusastic, friendly and a great personality.”

About Alison

Alison Church was born and raised in Surrey and continues to live near her large, close family. Ali works part-time providing VIP transport for a holiday company. She is an avid babershopper, not only singing with Surrey Harmony but also with the very entertaining Sing & Tonic quartet, which has been going for about ten years (with a few changes of line up and name). Her love of barbershopping has also recently led her to join a mixed chorus enjoying the different dynamic that provides. In the little time that she isn’t barbershopping Ali enjoys reading and sewing.
