Learning through friendly competition

Competition is the focal point of the annual convention. It provides an opportunity for members of Sweet Adelines International within the Quartet of Nations to learn and grow their singing and performing skills through friendly contests. Members can participate to compete as part of a quartet and/or chorus. The qualifying winners may then proceed to represent Region 31 in the Sweet Adelines International Competition & Convention that occurs toward the end of every calendar year.

Each registered quartet and/or chorus may choose to compete in one of the following contest divisions:

International Division

    • Competitors perform two contestable songs or medleys within seven minutes
    • Judges give a numerical score to each competitor as well as feedback
    • Winners become eligible to represent the region in the Sweet Adelines International Competition & Convention

Evaluation Only

    • Competitors perform two contestable songs or medleys within seven minutes
    • Judges give a category level as well as feedback

Open Division

    • Competitors perform a 10-minute entertainment package with at least one contestable song
    • Judges give a category level as well as feedback on emcee work, scripting, stating, mic technique, creativity and the the unity of the entire presentation as communicated to the audience

Song Assessment Tool

The Song Assessment Tool assists singers with research to determine whether a song is appropriate for Sweet Adelines to sing. The ever-expanding Song Evaluation Database lists songs which have already been researched.

Our members-only DEI resources include: Song Assessment Tool Components, the history and ongoing work of the SA Diversity & Inclusivity Task Force and important information relating to our DEI Council. To access members-only DEI resources, you must be logged in as a member. Not sure how to log in to view? Please view the step-by-step login instructions (which includes screenshots and how to navigate our members-only education portal.)

Once you are logged in you can click this link to access the Song Assessment Tool.

Staging

The Standard configuration of risers (no inverted centre) will be used. 11 sets of 4 foot, 4 step risers will be on stage. Contestants will enter stage left and exit stage right. A traffic pattern walkthrough video will be shared providing a full explanation of the route.

Rehearsal Rooms

There are a limited number of rehearsal spaces available at the Octagon.  Booking can be direct by each Chorus.

Collection of Competitor Packets

Competitor packets containing results and judges’ evaluations will be available to collect for up to 30 minutes after the awards ceremony.  Only chorus presidents/team coordinator and/or director are allowed to collect the chorus results packet.

Please refrain from publishing any results on social media until such time that the region posts the official results on its’ Facebook page. This is to allow competitors time to see the results for themselves first before they become public.
